Literacy Outreach

COWAC, in cooperation with the Canadian Authors Association, Niagara has recently organized a literacy outreach program in the Fort Erie Elementary School system as a trial program for possible inclusion next year throughout the entire Niagara region. The vehicle chosen was poetry in grades 7 & 8.

Every principal at each elementary school was invited to send a grade 7 or 8 teacher to an all-day workshop for teachers held at the Holiday Inn in Fort Erie. Only five principals responded, all from the District School Board of Niagara: John Mastroianni, Crystal Beach, Sue Stroeh, Fort Erie, Beverley Parker, Stevensville and Shellee Niznik, Rose Seaton. The workshop was run by Dr. Ann Goldsmith, a published poet from Buffalo. On hand were Elizabeth Glenny, Poetry Chair for the CAA, Niagara and Mike Keenan, President, CAA, Niagara as well as Executive Officer, COWAC.

The following teachers attended: Dave Mousseau, Cindy Kohinski, Steve Train, Lyn Meyer and Indira Chadda. Following the workshop, Ann visited each classroom three times and helped to prepare the students for an upcoming poetry contest. Results of the poetry contest will be published in hard copy and on our web site.
