Some Distinguished Graduates

Gandhi advised to begin with the children to create change. That has been our goal. What has become of some of the "children", those who were involved in the early Niagara MUN programs, those who have just begun to establish their careers?

We try to keep in touch as best we can, and through scattered reports, we are quite proud to relate the following about some of our graduates:

Ian Billingsley: M.D., Queen's University. Ian is a Resident in Internal Medicine in Toronto.

Scott Bomhof: LL. B., University of Toronto. Scott is a partner at Torys Law firm in Toronto. Torys is an international law firm with 300 lawyers in Toronto, New York and Beijing. With an acknowledged reputation for handling large high profile mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance transaction, Torys is also preeminent in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, as well as other aspects of business law.

Adam Branscombe: Hons. B.A., University of Western Ontario. Adam worked as a research analyst for a national commercial real estate firm and has since moved into business development, now in sales for Empori.com, a rapidly growing e-commerce start-up.  

Patrick Crocco: M.Sc., London School of Economics, LL.M., King's College London. LL.B., University of Ottawa. Patrick is in London, England working as a lawyer at Landwell where he practises Securities Law.

Mike D'Abramo: B. A., University of Toronto. Mike was a secondary school teacher in Toronto and has now joined a private think tank..

Ryan Foster: M.D., University of Toronto. Ryan is a Resident in Internal Medicine in Toronto.

Jo-Ann Harrold: M.D. McMaster University. Jo-Ann is a Pediatrician at McMaster Medical Centre.

Peter Harrold: Honours Business Administration, Sir Wilfred Laurier University. Peter is working in Orilla.

Jennifer Hollett: BA, Journalism and Communications, Concordia University. is now working as a VJ and Videographer for Much Music. You can find more info at: http://www.muchmusic.com/personalities/jenn/index.html She worked at Sony Music Canada developing online content and became the youngest manager in the company, responsible for online marketing in the New Media group. Jenn was one of the hosts of The Chatroom, a new live, interactive show on CTV's digital television network Talk TV.

Karyn Keenan: M. E. S., York University, LL B., Osgoode Hall. Karyn is working for the Canadian Environmental Law Association, has performed volunteer legal aid for indigenous people in Bolivia's Amazon Basin and in Lima, Peru, helping to organize those threatened by international oil and mining initiatives.

Kelly Keenan: Hons.B.Sc., Queen's, LLB.,University of British Columbia. After clerking at the British Columbia Court of Appeal, Kelly works for Blake, Cassels and Graydon Law firm in Vancouver which has offices in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, London and Beijing, employing 450 lawyers.

Karen Knutson: BA (hons.), MA, Art History, Queen's, Ph.D., Curriculum Studies (Art Education), UBC. Karen is a post-doctoral fellow at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh, and Project Manager of the Museum Learning Collaborative (the 1st federally funded --NEA, NEH, NSF, and IMLS--grant to study learning in museums). Her first book is due in June 2002. It's called Learning Conversations in Museums (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates), and the second book is underway.

Miriam Lapp: Ph. D., University of Montreal. Miriam is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Western Ontario.

Alexis Pike: LL. B., University of Ottawa. Alexis is working as a lawyer in Toronto at Davies Ward & Beck Law firm.

Cara Pike: BA, Communications & Environmental Studies, McGill; MS, Environmental Science, California State University Fullerton. Senior Director of Communications at Earthjustice (formerly Sierra Club Legal Defence Fund).

Jeff Remington: M. D., McMaster University. Jeff is practicing medicine in Port Colborne.

Andy Sawada: B. A., Brock University. Andy is an elementary teacher in Peterborough. He will have a huge positive effect on countless children who are fortunate to encounter him during his career.

Shannon-Marie Soni: B.A., English Literature and Political Studies, Queen's, Masters of International Affairs, International University of Japan. Shannon-Marie is a Foreign Service Officer with Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs.

 Lisa Talbot: LL. B., University of Toronto. Lisa is working as a corporate lawyer in Toronto.

Rob Walters: LL. B., University of Ottawa. Rob is working as a labour lawyer in Toronto.

Haidee Wasson: BA, MA, Ph. D., (Communications) McGill University. Haidee was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship as well as a Social Sciences and Humanities Post-Doctoral Grant (a Canadian Federal fellowship) and was visiting scholar at the University of Exeter and also at the Museum of Modern Art (NY) and New York University. She is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature and has a book under contract with the University of California Press.

The above are merely a brief sample. Please contact us if you are able to update us on more grads. Additional Niagara MUN participants are in their final years of programs in medicine, law, education, politics, journalism and business.

Empirical evidence indicates that participation in MUN activity correlates highly with future career success. From Fort Erie to Hamilton, our students have been awarded graduate and post-graduate scholarships from major international academic institutions including Queens, Yale, M. I. T., Dalhousie, McMaster University, University of Toronto, U. B. C., and many other distinguished Universities throughout North America.

We firmly believe that Canadian students, in similar fashion to Canadian athletes, when given an opportunity to compete internationally, will establish themselves amongst the best and the brightest in their respective fields. The Council on World Affairs will do all that it can to help bring this about.
