Secretary Of State Visits

by Nik Spilka

The Honourable Barbara McDougall, Canada's Secretary Of State for External Affairs recently addressed A. N. Myer's Council on World Affairs, fielding tough questions from students on world issues.

Ms. McDougall, a U. of T. graduate and expert in the field of business finance, impressed a large gathering with reasoned responses, demonstrating why she is a valued member of the Conservative cabinet.

Kelly Keenan, COWA president, acted capably as moderator for the event. Unfortunately, despite the prestigious nature of this visit, the local newspaper, the Niagara Falls Review, provided scant coverage and no photo. 1300 Myer students and their families, many subscribers, were not impressed!

Students are as capable of meaningful dialogue with political leaders as adults, especially those in Niagara schools who engage in Model United Nations competitions. Ms McDougall was asked tough, probing questions that indicated a sophisticated grasp by youth of world issues.

Having experienced years of intense questioning by the media and rival parties, she was most impressed with her young audience and indicated a strong satisfaction with the dialogue that ensued.
